To update it, run the Apple Software Update. When the program launches, it checks to see if there are any updates available for your computer. If one of those updates is for Apple Software Update, clear all the check boxes except the one for Apple Software Update, then select Install. If any updates are available, click the Update Now button to install them. Or click ”More info” to see details about each update and select specific updates to install. When Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, the installed version of macOS and all of its apps are also up to date.
Today Apple released macOS Catalina 10.15.6 for their Mac computers. Follow these steps to make sure you get this update and future updates when they are announced.
Mac Computer
- Open System Preferences — found under the Apple menu in the top left of your screen.
- Choose Software Update — represented by an icon of gears.
- There is an option in Software Update described as “Automatically keep my Mac up to date” and you’ll see a checkbox to the left of that. If you have selected this option, there may be a delay before the update is identified as available and installed.
- If the automatic update option is selected, remove the checkmark. Or, if it is not selected, select it. Making any change in this setting will cause the computer to check-in with the Apple update servers.
- You’ll be notified that the update is available and you can click the Update Now button as shown below.

Additional Notes and Considerations
- Automatic Updates. You may wish to have the automatic update option deselected so that you are not surprised by any problematic updates that cause issues for your computer.
- Dark Mode. The example shown below is from a computer set to Dark Mode. Your screen may have a different appearance.
- Notifications. You may not be immediately notified of updates for your Apple devices. So, to find out about updates promptly, you may want to subscribe to YouTube tech channels such as ZolloTech.
Every time software from Apple requests to be updated by Apple Software Update, the error pictured below pops-up and I end-up having to do a manual reinstall. Here the picture shows the most recent update for iCloud and iTunes, but I have also had QuickTime do the same thing. It would seem like each manual install would reinstall a fresh copy of ASU, but it keeps having the same issues. Please help diagnose this issue. The 'Download Only' option in the popup window does work, but it would be nice for ASU to do that itself.
